Date

Presenter
Dr. Jen Pierce
Affiliation
Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Boise State University and Director of the Earth Wind and Fire Laboratory
Bio/Abstract

Abstract: In this session, guest presenter Dr. Jen Pierce addresses the connections between global environmental change and the changing nature of fire in Idaho. Dr. Pierce focuses on several key messages:

  1. rising temperatures dry out vegetation
  2. more fire ignitions and longer fire seasons will mean more fires
  3. increased wind will lead to more severe fires
  4. the effects of fire extend beyond the burn perimeters to include impacts such as debris flows, smoke, economic impacts, and increased CO2 in the atmosphere.

This webinar is the first in a 4-part series that aims to:

  • Engage Idaho environmental educators/interpreters with leading edge fire and climate science that is applicable to place-based education in Idaho, and
  • Support and strengthen the work of climate communicators in Idaho and create a community of practice that includes both educators and scientists.
