Gavin SchmidtDr. Schmidt will provide a global climate science overview of “what we know and how we know it,” and describe the particular challenges of climate change communication and effective strategies for engaging on the issue, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Dr. Gavin Schmidt has been the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies director since 2014. His main research interest is the use of climate modeling to understand past, present, and future climate change, and he has authored or co-authored more than 150 research papers in peer-reviewed literature. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was the inaugural winner of the AGU Climate Communication Prize in 2011. He has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Oxford University and a doctorate in applied mathematics from University College London.

In an effort to ensure effective fulfillment of the Biden Administration’s climate science objectives for NASA, the agency has established a new position of senior climate advisor and selected Dr. Schmidt to serve in the role in an acting capacity until a permanent appointment is made.
